An x-ray tech class is available at radiology technical schools, technician colleges, universities, hospitals and even federal agencies. Regardless of where you plan to study, an x-ray tech class should teach you the skills and knowledge needed in managing x-ray imaging processes, transporting patients for x-rays, explaining to patients about x-ray procedures and handling equipments.

A four-year x-ray tech class will provide you with a bachelor's degree, while a two-year program will get you an associates degree. Some schools offer a one-year x-ray tech class, which allows you to receive a certificate upon completion. However, be aware that the longer your x-ray tech class finishes, the better career opportunities you will face after graduation.

During an x-ray tech class, expect your trainer to teach you how to use radiography in capturing images of the body and provide image information for diagnosis by a physician or dentist. This information is used in repairing broken bones and treating illnesses or diseases. An important part of your x-ray tech class should be hands-on training. During this part, you will learn how to operate x-ray machines and gain knowledge of the safety issues related to radiation.

Your x-ray tech class should include studies in anatomy, pathology, physiology, medical terminology and ethics, uses of radiologic technology and safety measures from excessive radiation. Other subjects included in the curriculum are charting abbreviations, systems approach, radiation physics, radiobiology, fluoroscopic studies, orthopedic studies and digital imaging. Through the x-ray tech class, you should learn the proper positioning of patients for various imaging techniques.

Usually, the last part of a tech program is internship. Through your on-the-job training, you will be able to implement everything you learned in class. Without an internship, it can be hard to pass for a state licensing or certification, which is required by most employers.
